The Real World Design Challenge (RWDC) is a yearly event hosted by the Office of Science, United States Department of Energy. The challenge provides high school age students with the opportunity to use top-of-the-line, professional design software to solve real world engineering scenarios. Students will present their solutions to a regional panel of judges and winners will travel to Washington DC to particpate in the national challenge.
The 2008-2009 program year marks Pennsylvania's first involvement with the (RWDC). Sign up for the challenge and scheduling of teacher training for the desing software is being handled through the STEM Regional points of contact. Pennsylvania has the second highest registration of all 10 state who entered. The challenge will be adjudicated in February 2009.
The software for teachers and engineering students is being made possible by the Parametric Technology Corporation. Teachers do not have to participate in the challenge to recieve the free software, they must only complete the required training course.
