The NGA STEM Grant Program was funded for a period of two years through a combination of $500,000 from the NGA Center for Best Practices and a matching $500,000 from a state organization. In the case of Pennsylvania, that state partner is the Team Pennsylvania Foundation, the Commonwealth's statewide public-private economic development partnership. The NGA funding was made possible by the Gates Foundation and the Intel Foundation, who partnered with NGA to support this initiative.
Above and beyond the initial million dollar investment, the states must find ways to sustain their programs. Pennsylvania did not wait until the end of the initial grant cycle to begin planning for the sustainability of the initiative. The leadership of the Pennsylvania STEM Initiative and the Team Pennsylvania Foundation have secured sponsorship support and investment from business, foundation, nonprofit and higher education partners.
The goal of preparing the youth of today to be the workforce of tomorrow is an essential task, and the citizens and industry of Pennsylvania and beyond will benefit from its success. In order to succeed in achieving our goal, the Pennsylvania STEM Initiative needs participation and support from students, families, school and business.
